Learn to Boulder.

This course is a fun and friendly introductory course designed to give you the skills to safely boulder at indoor climbing walls.

  • Lesson content: Rules of a indoor bouldering facility, how to fall safely, basic movement including footwork, body positioning, efficient transition between handholds & how to read sequences.
  • Prerequisites: No previous experience required.
  • Gear required: Shoes & chalk provided.
  • Session time: 1 hour.
  • Participants: 1 or 2, 14+.

Learn the Ropes.

A course designed to start building competence in the five key skills of bottom-roping & start you on the path to safely enjoying the routes at indoor climbing walls.

  • Lesson content: Our instructor will focus upon; rules of an indoor climbing facility, fitting harnesses, tying in, loading a belay device, belaying & lowering your climber. Dependent upon time your instructor may progress on to pre-climb checks, ground anchors & how to take or hold a fall.
  • Prerequisites: No previous experience required.
  • Gear provided: Harness & belay device.
  • Session time: 2 hours.
  • Participants: 2 required, 14+.

Learn to Lead.

Safely bottom-roping at indoor climbing facilities? Maybe its time to try leading…

  • Lesson content: Lead belaying, clipping, taking & holding lead falls & how to deal with, or avoid, the hazards associated with leading. This session will progress at your speed from ground-based teaching on to practise leads using a bottom-rope for safety. Depending on how you’re feeling your instructor may choose to let you try your first live lead at the end… either way… the key skills required to lead safely will be covered.
  • Pre-requisites: Competent in all aspects of bottom-rope safety.
  • Personal gear required: As a competent bottom-roper it is expected that you will provide your own harness, belay device & shoes. Lead ropes are provided.
  • Session time: 2 hours.
  • Participants: 2 required, 14+.

Intro to Outdoor Bouldering.

Ready to take your bouldering outdoors? Let us show you some of Langdale’s classic bouldering…

  • Lesson content: Access & approach, use of guidebooks, outdoor boulder grading, how to warm-up effectively outdoors, how to stay warm between attempts, use of boulder mats, spotting, bouldering hazards & ways to avoid them, plus some climbing & coaching!
  • Prerequisites: Customers should be able to use indoor bouldering facilities safely. A minmum of 6 months’ experience of indoor bouldering across multiple facilities is desirable. Outdoor bouldering poses increased risks compared to indoor bouldering & because of the limited ways in which to mitigate them we may wish you to attend an indoor session with us to assess your suitability for the course.
  • Gear provided: Guidebooks & boulder mats.
  • Personal gear required: The following should be carried by each participant: walking footwear, insulation, waterproofs, food & drink, hat & gloves, sun-cream, extra water. It is also expected that clients, as competent indoor boulderers, will provide their own chalk & footwear.
  • Session time: 1000-1600, subject to availability.
  • Participants: 1-4, 18+.
  • Discount: Upon completing the course you will receive vouchers for 15% off Boulder Mats ordered through Ambleside Wall’s gear store. Plus 10% off our Learn the Ropes course if you’d like it!
  • Weather: Sessions are weather-dependent & in the event of our choosing to cancel you will be either offered a session at our indoor facility or a full refund.

Intro to Outdoor Climbing.

Mastered top-roping indoors? Time to start developing those outdoor skills with our qualified & experienced instructors…

  • Lesson content: Access & approach, use of guidebooks, trad grading, how to place wires, cams & slings, how to build anchors with either ropes or slings. This is a skills-based session designed to teach you how to build bottom-rope & top-rope systems at single pitch crags. If a session of solid climbing is what you’re after take a look at our Real Rock Taster.
  • Prerequisites: Customers should be competent in all aspects of indoor top-rope safety; fitting harnesses, tying-in, setting up a belay device, belaying & lowering a climber. A minimum of 6 months’ competence regarding indoor climbing across multiple facilities is desirable. Outdoor climbing poses increased risks compared to indoor climbing & we may wish you to attend an indoor session with us to assess your suitability for the course.
  • Gear provided: Guidebooks, trad gear, helmets, ropes & rigging equipment.
  • Personal gear required: The following should be brought by each participant: walking footwear, insulation, waterproofs, food & drink, hat & gloves, sun-cream, extra water. It is expected that, as competent indoor bottom-ropers, clients will provide their own harnesses & belay devices.
  • Session time: 1000-1600, subject to availability.
  • Participants: 1-4, 18+.
  • Discount: Upon completing the course you will receive vouchers for 15% off Ropes & Trad Gear, Screwgates & Quickdraws in Ambleside Wall’s gear store & 10% off our Learn to Lead course to help you keep pushing yourself.
