Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike is England’s Highest Mountain, standing at an impressive 977m/3205 feet tall. It is a beckoning symbol that at some point in your life must be climbed, with all paths to the top crossing remote, rugged and wild terrain. Adventure Peaks Lake District Guided Walk of Scafell Pike is a sure fire classic.

We begin this guided walk in the idyllic hamlet of Seathwaite. From there we follow the trail beyond Stockley Bridge rising up towards Sty Head Tarn before taking in the impressive corridor route up to the summit of Scafell Pike. Our decent takes us along the broad ridge over Ill Crag and Broad Crag before dropping down back to Stockley Bridge and our final end point back at Seathwaite.

Meeting Point/Transport

Please note there are two Seathwaites in the Lake District, one in Borrowdale near Keswick and one in Broughton in Furness. Our walk departs from Seathwaite in Borrowdale.

The group will meet at 9am at the turning circle at Seathwaite, postcode CA12 5XJ. There is roadside parking along the road leading to Seathwaite, and the turning circle is at the end of this road just in front of the farm. We recommend arriving early to get a space or you will be adding some road mileage to the route! Grid Ref: NY 235 123. Please note there is NO mobile signal at Seathwaite. You should have your rucksack packed ready to depart including a full packed lunch.

Please note that no transport is included as part of the walk. For those without their own transportation it may be possible to share transport with the guide or other members of the walk. In this case we do ask that a contribution is made to the fuel costs of the driver.

The day will finish between 4 – 5pm.

If you are not there within 20 minutes of the departure time (9am) the group will begin their walk.

Previous Experience

You should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable walking for 5-6 hours per day with around 987m (3,240ft) of ascent.

    Hi Aina

Thanks for your interest in our Guided Walks. The Lake District has very changeable weather and there is no way to accurately predict good weather in advance. Currently we are in Winter so we have lots of Wintry conditions, rain and snow are expected for the next few months. We would expect to have better conditions from Easter but if sunny and warm conditions are important you can look from late June onwards. All of our Guided Walks cost £30 per person.
    Kind regards, Neil

hi there, im looking to climb scarfell pike, in the next couple of months, ive walked in the lakes a few times, so i wonder if you can help im single so be nice to walk in a group and also can you tell me the best place to stay, when i was up there last time i got cabs and buses so nearer to the walk will be handy i stayed in keswick last time if you can help will be great thank you Jimmy

    • Neil on May 12, 2015 at 1:24 pm

Hi Jimmy, The Walk for Scafell Pike starts and finishes from Seathwaite Farm heading south towards Scafell Pike, therefore there are a couple of options for locations to stay in that area. There is a campsite at the farm itself if you wish to camp or a short distance away in Seatoller there are a number of hotels/ Bed and Breakfasts such as the Glaramara House which starts at £43 Bed and Breakfast. You could also look at staying in Keswick and catching the bus down to Seatoller. The other option that you have would be to stay in Ambleside and pay the extra £5 for the guide to give you a lift in the mini bus to the start. Most of the Scafell pike walks in summer tend to be reasonably busy though it is hard to tell until closer to the time, a lot of people tend to book about 2-3 weeks beforehand.

The Scafell Pike expedition on Sat was a great success and many thanks to you and of course Nathan who encouraged us along and over the notorious Scafell boulder field giving us lots of interesting facts and information on the way.

He chose a fine route with some unbelievable views. Coming on Piers Gill from the Corridor route was unforgettable.
    Many thanks
    Chris

  5. Stella on February 16, 2016 at 3:07 pm

Hello Iam interested in walking Scafell Pike summer/autumn. Could I bring my Border Collie Tess she is very well behaved and walked the Wainwright walk with me a couple of years ago.

    • Neil on February 16, 2016 at 5:19 pm

      Hi Stella

That would be fine, just make sure Tess can be put on a lead if other clients are nervous around dogs. Thanks!

  6. Luke Willis on June 6, 2016 at 9:48 pm

Hey want to do Scafell a few times first time be best guided I feel. Live in the area but work managing a pub, do you do any walks in the week? cause obviously I work every Saturday of the year ^^

    Cheers, Luke

    • Helen Stoker on June 8, 2016 at 9:57 am

      Hi Luke,

We don’t have any definite dates for Scafell Pike during the week as the weekends are the most popular dates and we need a minimum of 3 people to guarantee a walk. We could book you onto a walk during the week during the summer holidays if you can suggest some dates, however we would need another 2 people to book to guarantee the walk would definitely go ahead. Let me know if this is of any help,

      Thanks

      Helen

Hello, I’m interested in the guided walk up Scafell Pike on 10th June, is this an open group event? I may be on my own.

    Thanks

    Vicky

    • Alice Chivers on May 6, 2017 at 8:46 am

      Hi Vicky,
Yes it’s a walk open to anyone to join, we just need a minimum of 3 people to confirm it’s going ahead.
      Thanks,
      Alice

  9. Raji on December 29, 2018 at 8:21 am

    Hi
Couple of us are keen to join the guided walk to Scafell pike from Ambleside in April. Do you have any schedule published for April 2019 yet?

Also what are the charges per person?
    Thanks
    Raji

    • Alice Chivers on January 13, 2019 at 1:14 pm

Hi Raji, if you have dates in mind let us know and we can book you in. Dates will be published shortly but we can arrange on a date to suit you. The cost is £50 per person for up to 3 people, then £20 per person thereafter.
I will also send you an email.
      Thanks,
      Alice

Hi, I would love to climb Scafell Pike over the summer and am pretty fit and regularly walk 8/9 miles but nothing at any great height. My question is about heights. Am not good with sheer drops and cliff edges. Have spoken to friends who’ve done it and they say that Scafell Pike is an ok walk in this regard. Is this right?

    • Stu Peacock on July 31, 2020 at 2:34 pm

The Corridor route does have some exposure to drops at the side of you. I would recommend ascending from Wasdale via lingmell, which is much more straight forward and avoids any big drops. This can be arranged through us as a private walk if you are interested.
      Regards,
      Stu.

  11. Angela on September 14, 2021 at 10:58 am

    Hi,
Looking to join the guided walk of Scafell from Ambleside next summer. So booking a lift to the start of the walk would be great if that is still possible?I’ll be on my own so really like the sound of joining a group. I’ve just walked Snowdon and did find it tough but completed it. Do you think this puts me in a good place for walking up Scafell?
    Thank you

    • Alice Chivers on September 21, 2021 at 11:24 am

      Hi Angela,
Sometimes it is possible to arrange a lift to the start of the walk, depending where the guide is coming from. We would recommend regular walking in the run up to walking up Scafell Pike, Snowdon may be a slightly shorter walk than Scafell Pike depending on the route. Dates for next summer will be available to book early next year.
      Thanks

    Hello,
I’m looking to join a guided walk up Scafell during the week of 18th to 24th of June, when I will be on holiday in Keswick. Do you have any trips in that week. I will be a single walker, but very happy to join a group.

    • Alice Chivers on February 10, 2022 at 11:54 am

      Hi Jean,
There is a guided walk on 19th June which I see has now been booked.
      Thanks

  13. Anne on February 8, 2022 at 5:40 pm

Hi, will you be doing a guided Scafell Pike walk in October (23-28th)?
As weather is up and down then, I’d rather walk with someone who knows the walk 🙂
If so, can I bring my dog? She’s a great walker (as is her Upright) and yes will be on lead all the time.
    Anne

    • Alice Chivers on February 10, 2022 at 11:52 am

      Hi Anne,
We can plan a group guided walk for those dates, I’ll send you an email with details. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the Scafell Pike walk.
      Thanks
      Alice
