Ambleside

Duration: Around 4-5 hours Distance: 9.7km / 6 miles Total Ascent: 425m / 1395ft Wainwrights: Loughrigg (335m) Meeting Point: Ambleside Climbing Wall (101 Lake Road, Ambleside) Despite Loughrigg Fell being one of Ambleside Adventure’s shorter Lake District Guided Walks, it really packs a punch! With spectacular views across scenic lakes and tarns, craggy outcrops and the possibility to explore huge caves, this walk gives a fantastic sample of the best the Lake District has to offer. From our meeting point at Ambleside Climbing Wall we walk through the lovely Rothay Park, crossing the River Rothay and following a small road past scenic stepping stones and on to Rydal. We travel through the forest to Rydal Water and explore the amazing Rydal Caves before ascending the steep climb to Loughrigg Terrace. Here the views open up across Rydal, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere and beyond. The walk back to Ambleside takes us past tarns with mountain views all the way back to town. It is a place that has captured the heart of many famous poets and authors from Wordsworth, Thomas De Quincy and Wainwright. “Loughrigg has yet another attraction in the form of a tremendous cave, big enough to contain the entire population of Ambleside, which although manmade and now disused, is still a remarkable place.” “In brief, this fell has a wealth of interests and delight, and for many people who now find pleasure in walking over the greater mountains it serves as an introduction and an inspiration.” – Alfred Wainwright WHAT TO BRING - Walking boots (waterproof recommended) - Clothing suitable for walking (no jeans) - Rucksack (waterproof liner recommended) - Waterproof jacket and trousers - Warm layer, hat and gloves - Sun hat, sun glasses and sun cream - Water bottle (minimum 1 litre) - Snacks - Any personal medication including Epipens This list is mandatory year round.
