Intermediate/Advanced Mountain Navigation Skills Course
Service Description
Our full-day Public Level 2 Mountain Navigation course is designed for those who have completed Level 1 or equivalent training, and who want the skills, knowledge, and strategies to be able to navigate accurately across featureless terrain in poor visibility and conditions. This course will take place mostly off-trail in order to allow you to gain the confidence to navigate using the compass and contour features on the map. Whilst many of the skills are designed for poor visibility, we can teach the necessary strategies whatever the weather. WE WILL WORK ON: - Identifying small features using contours - Taking accurate bearings - Utilising navigation strategies such as aiming off and attack features - Identifying areas of potential hazard and danger from the map - Using back-bearings to check accuracy - Learning to deviate slightly from a compass bearing to avoid obstacles - Pacing and timing to accurately measure distance - Using contour-only navigation - Identify strategies that will help with accurate navigation in low visibility (eg. poor weather/darkness) - Be able to micro navigate to small or unidentifiable features - Identify potential escape routes both during planning and whilst out in the hills WHAT TO BRING: - Walking boots (waterproof recommended) - Clothing suitable for walking (no jeans) - Rucksack (waterproof liner recommended) - Waterproof jacket and trousers - Warm layer, hat and gloves - Sun hat, sun glasses and sun cream - Water bottle (minimum 1 litre) - Food (packed lunch and snacks) - Head torch (charged) - Any personal medication including Epipens - Personal equipment you'd like to practice with This list is mandatory year round. If you are missing any items please get in touch. Arriving to a Mountain Skills Course without these items may result in you being turned away. Your instructor will have all navigation equipment necessary. THIS ACTIVITY REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 3 PARTICIPANTS TO RUN. Minimum age 12 years.
Cancellation Policy
If you wish to cancel, you must update your booking information via the website or inform us in writing/via email. Your cancellation date is the date on which we receive written instruction or website confirmation. The following cancellation fees will apply: 30¬15 days before start date: retention of 50% of total price. 14 or fewer days before start date: retention of 100% of total price. The Company cannot be held responsible for any missed connecting transport that you have booked independently of the Company.
